// SIGNAL

Mobile won. Quietly. While everyone was watching consoles.

In 2015 mobile was 35% of gaming. By 2025 it was 55%. The crossing point hit during the pandemic and never reversed. Smartphone penetration crossed 6.5 billion devices, in app purchases hit $80.9B, and the average mobile session got longer every year. Console will always have prestige titles. Mobile has the money.

In 2026 the most watched gaming personalities pull crowds bigger than most national TV networks. Kai Cenat broke the Twitch all time sub record. MrBeast hit 1.18M concurrent on YouTube. Ibai pulled 9.33M on a single channel. These aren't streamers, they're broadcasters.

The creator economy ate the publisher's marketing budget.

In 2026 a single Kai Cenat stream sells more copies of a game than most TV ad campaigns. Publishers don't pay for trailers anymore, they pay for streamer attention. The MrBeast $1M event hit 1M concurrent in five minutes. Discoverability now flows through three people, not three hundred outlets.

// THE BIG MONEY

Riyadh Is Now the Capital.

The Esports World Cup 2025 hit 750M viewers worldwide and peaked at 7.98M concurrent during the League of Legends finals. Twenty five tournaments, 24 games, 2000+ players, 200 Clubs from 100 countries. The 2026 event extends that with a $75M prize pot, the largest in esports history.

What used to be a fragmented circuit run by publishers is now anchored by a single sovereign wealth backed mega event. Riot, Valve, Epic, and NetEase all signed in.

// THE WATCH PARTY

League Worlds Is Still The Super Bowl.

By raw viewership League of Legends Worlds is still the single most watched esports event on the planet. Riot now produces opening ceremonies that rival Super Bowl halftime shows. AR stage effects, custom anthem performances, and a year long storyline arc that culminates in the bracket.

The LCK (Korea) and LPL (China) rivalry remains the heart of competitive esports drama. North America's LCS still hunts for relevance.

// SHIFT IN PROGRESS

62% of hardcore gamers stopped buying games at full price.

The Generations in Play 2026 report (IGN / Dentsu, 6250 respondents across US, UK, Australia) found that 62% of all hardcore gamers refuse the full $70 entry fee. For Gen Z that number is 58%. Catalog services are no longer a side bet. They're the default. Game Pass and PS Plus are reshaping how publishers price launch day titles.

SECTOR 07 // AI ENTERS THE ARENA SENTIMENT: DIVIDED
SECTOR 07 // AI

AI in Games. Big Promise. Bigger Backlash.

AI in gaming is real now. NPCs you can actually talk to, procedural worlds, voice acting at scale. But the people making games hate it, and the people playing games are skeptical. GDC 2026 was the year the room turned.

// THE TECH

What Actually Works Now.

Generative NPCs. Ubisoft's "Teammates" demo at GDC 2026 lets you give natural voice commands to AI characters with distinct personalities. Players don't bark orders, they negotiate.

Procedural worlds. Tencent and NVIDIA showed orchestration platforms where hundreds of AI NPCs interact with each other in living worlds, generating emergent behaviors with no human players online.

Asset pipelines. 90% of developers now use AI somewhere in their workflow. Indie studios ship in months what used to take years.

// THE BACKLASH

52% of Devs Say It's Hurting the Industry.

The GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry Report dropped a number that shocked the industry. 52% of game developers now view generative AI negatively, up from 30% in 2025. Only 7% see it positively.

Quantic Foundry research shows 85% of gamers hold negative attitudes toward AI in games. The fear is "gameslop": low quality AI generated titles flooding storefronts and devaluing craft.

The technology is ready. The cultural permission isn't.

SECTOR 08 // THE FORECAST 2026 → 2030
SECTOR 08 // FORECAST

Five Things Coming Next.

Not predictions. These are already in motion. The release dates and patent filings are public. The question is how fast they reach you.

2026 // ACTIVE
GTA VI Lands. The Industry Restructures Around It.
Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI is expected late 2026 or early 2027. Industry analysts model it as the biggest entertainment launch in history. Publishers are deliberately moving major releases out of its launch window. It will eat console revenue for a full year.
2026 // ACTIVE
Switch 2 Carries Nintendo to Cross Platform Reality.
Nintendo's Switch 2 sold 3.5 million units in its first four days. By March 2026 Nintendo forecasts 15 million units. The handheld category is structurally bigger than it was a decade ago. Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally X, and Switch 2 collectively normalize portable AAA gaming.
2027 // PROJECTED
AI Native Games Reach Mass Market.
62% of new RPG and adventure titles now ship with AI NPCs. By 2027, players expect dynamic dialogue as default. Static dialogue trees become a review negative. Solo developers using AI tools ship games that out perform 50 person studios. The indie tier explodes.
2028 // PROJECTED
Cloud Gaming Crosses the Console Threshold.
The global cloud gaming market hits $23.79B in 2026, growing 26.8% annually. GeForce Now's RTX 5090 data centers stream 4K at 120fps. By 2028, latency improvements and 5G coverage make cloud good enough for ranked play. PlayStation Premium and Xbox Cloud Gaming converge on $20/month.
2029-2030 // SPECULATIVE
UGC Platforms Surpass Traditional Publishers.
Roblox is growing at 35% per year. By 2029 community generated economies on Roblox, UEFN (Fortnite), and Minecraft Marketplace will collectively pay creators more than EA, Take Two, and Ubisoft pay their entire dev staff. The hit driven publisher model gets squeezed from both ends: AI from below, UGC from the side.
2030 // STRUCTURAL
"Gaming" Stops Being a Category.
By 2030 gaming will have eaten chat, watch, shop, and socialize. Roblox is already proof of concept: 144M daily users using a game engine for everything except the game. Fortnite hosts concerts that outsell stadium tours. The line between game, social network, and platform disappears for anyone under 18.
SECTOR 09 // FIELD NOTES FOR PLAYERS
SECTOR 09 // FIELD NOTES

Things The Headlines Get Wrong.

Three patterns this dossier kept finding. They don't fit on a chart so they go here.

NOTE 01

"Player decline" usually isn't.

When Marvel Rivals dropped from 644K to 65K concurrent on Steam, the headlines said "82% decline". That's normal post launch behavior for every free to play multiplayer game ever shipped. The early hype crowd churns. The committed base remains. The same thing happened to Helldivers 2 and Overwatch 2. Healthy live service games stabilize at 10 to 15% of peak.

NOTE 02

"Mobile gamers" are everyone now.

Coverage still treats mobile as a separate category for casual players. It isn't. PUBG Mobile pulled $1.8B in 2025. Honor of Kings pulled $2.2B. The boundary between mobile and console is gone for anyone under 25 in APAC, LATAM, or MENA. Cross platform play makes the device choice cosmetic. The console wars are an English language nostalgia trip.

// NOTE 03

Discord is the platform. Everything else is a feature.

For Gen Alpha and Gen Z gamers in 2026, the actual platform isn't Roblox or Fortnite or Steam. It's the Discord voice channel running in the background. The game is what you do while you're hanging out. This is the structural shift the industry hasn't priced in yet: the social layer outlives every individual title. When the next Fortnite arrives the same friend group migrates together in an afternoon.
